How to Host a Golf-Themed Father's Day BBQ in Under an Hour

Every year Tom goes to the range on Father's Day, and every year I turn it into an excuse to throw a party. That is the deal we have made, and I have never once been upset about it.

A golf-themed BBQ sounds like it requires a lot of planning. It does not. Here is exactly how I pull it off.

Start with the Table

Grab a strip of AstroTurf from the hardware store for about four dollars, cut it to the length of your table, and hot-glue a ribbon along both edges to finish it. Scatter a few golf balls and tees on top and you have a table runner that looks intentional and costs almost nothing.

Underneath it, I lay a dark green table cover from Factory Direct Party so the whole surface reads like a putting green before a single decoration goes down.

Rename Everything on Your Food Table

This costs nothing and it is the thing people talk about most.

Cut index cards in half and write out your menu in golf terms:

Club Sandwiches
Chip Shots for your potato chips
Putt-tatoe Salad
Birdie Bites for appetizers and finger foods

Label your drink dispenser Water Hazard and your adult drinks The 19th Hole. It takes ten minutes and ties the whole spread together.

Make a Centerpiece in Under Five Minutes

Fill a clear glass vase or fishbowl with sand and golf balls. Cut a small triangle from cardstock, write Dad's Day on it, and tape it to a bamboo skewer or chopstick. Press it into the sand.

That is your centerpiece. It looks custom and costs under three dollars.

Set Up a Backyard Putting Contest

Lay a few solo cups on their sides in the grass and mark distances with tees. Keep score on a chalkboard or a piece of paper on the table.

The kids will play for an hour without being asked, and you will probably get your best photo of the day before Dad even gets home.

Build One Signature Drink Station and Leave It Alone

An Arnold Palmer pitcher and a labeled 19th Hole option for the adults are all you need.

Set it up before anyone arrives, put your cups right there, and do not touch it again. This is the single thing that gives you your afternoon back as a host.
