The Best Fourth of July We Never Planned

Let me tell you about the Fourth of July that almost wasn't.

Three years ago I had everything planned. The yard was set up the night before. The drink station was stocked. Tom had been talking about his grill setup for approximately two weeks longer than necessary.

And then it rained.

Not a light drizzle. A full, committed, this-is-not-stopping rainstorm that arrived at noon and showed absolutely no signs of leaving.

Thirty people were due at three o'clock.

I stood at the kitchen window with my coffee and just stared at it for a long moment. Then Tom walked in, looked outside, looked at me, and said absolutely nothing. Which is how I knew it was bad.

Here is what I did.

I moved everything inside. Every single thing.

The drink station went on the kitchen counter. The food table moved to the dining room. I pulled every chair we owned from every corner of the house and lined them along the walls. I lit every candle I had. I put on music. I opened the windows so people could still hear the rain.

And when guests started arriving, soaking wet and laughing, something unexpected happened.

It was better.

Not better than a perfect sunny Fourth of July. But better than I expected. Better than it had any right to be.

Thirty people crammed into our house, kids running between legs, everyone a little damp, the candles going, the rain loud on the windows.

It felt like something.

What I learned that day is something my mom had actually been trying to tell me for years: the supplies and the setup matter a lot less than you think when the people are right.

But I will also say this, having the right things on hand saved me that afternoon.

Stars and stripes on every plate, indoors or out. It looked just as festive on my dining room table as it would have in the backyard. Nobody would have known it wasn't the plan all along.

Everything coordinated, everything already together. When I was scrambling to move things inside I did not have to think about a single place setting. It was already done.

The rain stopped just before nine. We carried our drinks outside and watched the fireworks from the wet grass.

It is still one of my favorite Fourth of July memories.

Turns out you cannot plan for everything. But you can be ready for anything.
