The Lesson My Mother Taught Me That Changed How I Host

Hi again,

If there is one person responsible for my love of hosting, it is my mother.

She had a wonderful ability to gather people together. Our home was the place where holidays were celebrated, birthdays were marked, and Sunday lunches often turned into long afternoons around the table.

For years I thought it all came together effortlessly. 

But as I grew older, I begans to notice something.

The evening before any gathering, the house would already be halfway prepared. The table would be set, serving pieces arranged, candles ready to be lit, and even the music thoughtfully chosen.

Once I asked her why she always prepared so much in advance.

She smiled and said, “So tomorrow I can enjoy the party too.” It’s a lesson I still carry with me.

Preparing ahead of time changes everything. When the details are ready, the host can actually be present talking, laughing, and enjoying the gathering rather than rushing through it.

She also reminded me of something equally important: not to overcomplicate things.

Some of the best gatherings are the simplest ones: a table, good food, and people who are happy to be together.

And in the end, that’s what hosting is really about.
